In a quest to find something good out of this fuel crisis, time.com presents the silver lining to this cloud we call high gas. This article highlights all the good things that have resulted from escalating fuel costs. And you know what, I kinda get it. Here are a few:
- Four-Day Work Weeks. Many companies, colleges, and governments are moving to this schedule and saving big money on their own energy costs. Sick leave and turnover is down at these places as well.
- Less Pollution. People are driving less and our air is cleaner. According to Time, an estimated 2200 less deaths have occurred in the past year as the result of less pollution.
- More Frugality. People are being more creative with their spending. Scooter sales are up, SUV sales are down.
- Less Traffic. The Federal Highway Administration says that travel was down 2.1% in the first quarter of 2008. Many people are opting for public transportation where available.
- Less Obesity. Now this isn't one that I've really considered. But with people walking and biking more and having less money to eat out, obesity could fall 10% according to Time.
So there you have it folks. Next time you fill up, don't curse...smile. You're making America a better place.
