Baby Mamas in America

So last night I watched Part I of CNN's two-part special, "Black in America." It focused on black women...sorta kinda but not really. The second installment, which focuses on black men, comes on tonight at 9PM ET. In all, I thought it was a well thought out presentation. I do wish there were more positive examples on the show but I suppose the intent was to highlight conflict.

The show revealed that 45% of black women have never been married compared to 23% of white women. I had heard similar stats before so that didn't really shock me. Now what I find quite alarming is black women having a bunch of kids despite their marital status. There were two examples on the show of single black women raising 5 kids each. One of the women was raising her sister's child in addition to her 4.

Five kids? Are you kidding me? I am the product of a single mother so I think I can speak on this topic a little bit. I know it was hard enough for my mom to raise me...JUST me...alone. What the hell? How a woman allows herself to become impregnated over and over is beyond me. We're always calling for the black man to take responsibility but damn. You can get condoms free nowadays. Use them sisters...please.

Erykah Badu recently came under fire for becoming pregnant a third time by a third 'baby daddy.' Now when you got Badu money, I can't really say shit because the kids will be taken care of. But if you ain't got a pot to piss in already, why aren't you protecting yourself and potential kids from such a harsh reality? Poverty is no joke.

We all make mistakes and I'm in no position to judge anyone but I just don't get it. We must do better. We can't count on our men to save us.
